Today (4/17/2025), Hillside Public Schools and @scholastic hosted their 2025 R.E.A.L. Read Festival! Hundreds of Hillside Public Schools students in grades 4 - 6 from our three elementary schools (Deanna G. Taylor Academy, Hurden Looker Elementary School, and Ola Edwards Community School) filled Woodfield Stadium for a fun-filled day with interactive literacy activities. This event culminated in the celebration of the partnership between Hillside Public Schools and Scholastic, specifically the Scholastic R.E.A.L. (Read, Excel, Achieve, Lead) Mentorship Program! The Scholastic R.E.A.L. Mentorship Program is designed to support families and community members in mentoring students through monthly interactive read-alouds, promote academic and social growth, and make a lasting impact on students’ lives! The second "Brothers Bonding with Books and Basketball" session was this past Saturday, April 5th, 2025! The turnout of students was even larger than in our first session! The second "Brothers Bonding with Books and Basketball" session occurred at Ola Edwards Community School! Once again, students in attendance played various basketball games and participated in activities that connected with reading and literacy! Thank you, Superintendent Glover, Supervisors Ms. Simon and Ms. Muldrow, Principal Davis, Vice-Principal Guilford, Director Mr. McNeil, Ms. Harris, Ms. Rivera, Ms. Smith, Hillside Public Schools' staff, students, and the Hillside Board of Education! Hip-Hop Legend Darryl "DMC" McDaniels of Run DMC (@kingdmc) visited Hillside Public Schools District this week, Read Across America Week, March 2 – 6, 2025! Iconic hip-hop pioneer Darryl “DMC” McDaniels presented his children’s book, “Darryl’s Dream” to third and fourth-grade students from our elementary schools at Ola Edwards Community School! "Darryl's Dream," co-authored by Shawnee Warfield, Johnny Warfield, and Adam Padilla, with illustrations by Tristan Tait is a heartwarming story that encourages children to embrace their creativity, build confidence, and find their unique voice! Each student received a signed copy of "Darryl's Dream" to bring home! Students and staff had an absolute blast, shoutout to Superintendent Glover, Principal Davis, Vice-Principal Guilford, Ms. Harris, Ms. Dotel, Mrs. Pereira, Mrs. DeFluri, the Hillside Board of Education, and all of the Hillside Public Schools staff and students for making this event a huge success!
